The Blackett sisters Nancy and Peggy are on their rollicking best behaviour both as thePirates they long to be and as the ever so perfect hostesses to their unwelcome Great Aunt the G A A string of complications begin almost immediately for the pair, when an unwelcome telegram arrives from the G.A to say that she is coming to take charge while Mrs Blackett is away Rather than create pandemonium, this news proves to

Apparently Evgenia, Mrs Ransome, didn t like this one at all I really can t understand why this is probably my favourite of the series, even though it lacks the Swallows Perfectly paced, beautifully plotted, and back in the Lakes What s not to like I have also always thought that this is the one that ought to be dramatised I can see why TV and film makers go for Swallows and s it s the first and Coot Club better plot than Swallows and

Do you really think she is going to make it very awful said Dorothea Pretty awful, I expect, said Peggy She usually does Dick, Dorothea, and the s expect a blissful time of adventures and sailing while Nancy and Peggy s Mother and Uncle Jim are away, but when the s GA Great Aunt decides she needs to come to oversea things, all their hopes are dashes They hide Dick and Dorothea away in a little hut so the GA doesn t see them They live as Picts

Not the very best of his books but better than most that other people write He has a magical gift for taking you there, showing you the world though the eyes of people you are nothing like except I hope, in kindness, concern and a lively interest in the natural world , interesting you in things that might otherwise pass you by, and bringing it all to life in a story that Jake Thackray might describe as a good tale, a little improbable, but a good ta

Not sure why I keep going back and re re reading Arthur Ransome s kid s books because they re good I guess They re set in the English Lake Country mostly in the 1920s I think and the adventures revolve around sailing and camping In this one, a horrible old maiden aunt makes trouble for the kids, and they in turn plot deviously to foil her It s not my absolute fave in the series, but it s entertaining and there is a nice plot twist at the end One thing I lo

This is the penultimate full Swallows and s novel by Arthur Ransome, and revolves around Nancy, Peggy, Dick and Dorothea The Swallows do not appear at all, although they are mentioned frequently it also is evident that they are about to visit at the end, presumably a set up for the next book.Nancy and Peggys great aunt has been mentioned in at least one previous book, but has not been given much to do before this title Here, she invites herself to babysit for the

Just perfect Reminds you of human decency and goodness And fun most of all Nancy remains my role model I rarely live up to her standards but one can continue trying This will bolster me against a trying week ahead.

This was the last completed novel in the Swallows and s series to be set in the Lake District, and shows Arthur Ransome tacklingserious issues than had been evident in the previous novels Indeed, the Swallows are absent from this adventure, with the principal focus falling on Dorothea and Dick Callum the Ds It is summer 1931 or 1932 and the Ds have travelled up to the Lake directly from their respective schools at the start of the holidays The plan is that they will stay with
